Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic and resistance training and rehabilitation therapy on isokinetic lower extremity strength on the stroke patients. The hemiparetic patients were divided into two groups such as aerobic & resistance training group (ARG, age: 70.5¡¾4.5 yrs) and rehabilitation therapy group (RTG, age: 72.0¡¾6.0 yrs). ARG participated in 10-weeks training program (three sessions/wk, 1hr/session). Aerobic training(3 times/week, 20 min/day at 70%HRmax) and resistance training (3 times/week, 40 min/day at 13 RPE) was provided for ARG. RTG participated in the aquatic exercise (2 times/week, 60 min/day) and the physical therapy (3 times/week, 30 min/day). The body composition, blood pressure, range of motion and isokinetic lower extremity strength were measured before and after 10 weeks of training. The body weight systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in ARG were significantly decreased after 10weeks(p<.05). RTG showed significant decrease in the DBP(p<.05). The range of motions in RTG was significantly increased at the unaffected and affected hip flexion(p<.05). ARG showed significant improvement of isokinetic peak torque (60¡Æ/sec) in the extension and flexion on both limbs(p<.05). The total work (180¡Æ/sec) in ARG was significantly increased the unaffected knee extension and flexion(p<.05). RTG showed significant increases of the total work in the unaffected knee extension(p<.05). This study demonstrated that the combination of the aerobic and resistance training is effective in the improvements of the body composition and the lower extremity strength. The rehabilitation therapy is helpful to improve the range of motions on the stroke patients.
